Traci got this recipe for biscuits from her mother and grandmother. It makes it simple and quick to make biscuits–kind of like homemade Bisquick. Our guests love them.

Mix:

  • 5 lb. flour
  • 3/4 cup baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 lb. Crisco butter flavored shortening (4 cups)

Biscuits:

  • 3 cups mix
  • 2/3 cup milk

To make the mix:
Cut the ingredients together until they are the consistency of cornmeal. Store in an airtight container or Ziplock back at room temperature.

To make the biscuits:
Preheat the oven to 450F.

Place some wax paper on a counter or table and spread some flour on it. Combine the mix and the milk in a large bowl, and spread it out on the wax paper. Press the dough out with your fingers. It should be about 1/2-3/4" thick.

Pour some vegetable oil on a cookie sheet. Cut the biscuits out using a small juice glass or cutter dipped in flour. Dip the biscuits in the oil and place evenly on the cookie sheet oil side up.

Bake at 450F for 10-12 min or until golden brown.

Prep time: 20 min.
Cook time: 12 min.
